UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

Graduate Work

While completing my masters degree, I worked on several projects bridging cultural heritage, architectural history, and urban + environmental planning. Focus sites included Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, Colonial National Historical Park (National Park Service), and various locations around Venice, Italy. Please click each topic for work samples.

The Facade’s Facade

A study of the history, materiality, and preservation of red wash, a reddish pigment historically applied to brick structures to brighten their exteriors and demonstrate wealth and power.

The Plague in the Passageway

An urban analysis of a highly-decorated sotoportego in Venice, Italy with special symbolic and cultural significance: according to legend, it once stopped the plague from entering a neighborhood.

3D Cultural Heritage Informatics

Examples of 3D scanning work completed in Spring 2022, including artifacts, historic homes, and cultural landscapes. Featured sites: Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, UVA’s Sunnyside House, and the St. John Rosenwald School in Albemarle County, Virginia.

Preserving the Public’s Place

An analysis of preservation planning issues in Charlottesville’s historic Downtown Mall as it celebrates 50 years. Completed as a final project and presentation for Preservation Planning (PLAN 5300).

The Sinking Settlement

An assessment of Historic Jamestowne, rising sea levels, and heritage risk management practices in the United States. This project served as a launching point for a collaborative historical research and nature-based design project with Colonial National Historical Park (COLO) and UVA graduate students and faculty.
